Mark Di Ionno for the Ledger: Building boom can make Newark work
In his Thursday night address, Mayor Cory Booker talked of Newark becoming a model of urban transformation and the jobs it will create. One after another, he announced plans.
A state-of-art technology business center at Science Park. A luxury hotel across from the Prudential Arena. A children’s museum nearby. Three massive distribution centers Down Neck. Twenty-three acres of prime real estate around the Broad Street station. You can already hear the hammers banging and the steel beams clanging.
It all adds up to millions of square feet of construction and millions of dollars in construction jobs. Jobs for Newarkers.
Di Ionno considers how the building boom Booker announced during his State of the City will impact Newarkers. Seeing the administration’s focus on hiring local talent for local work, these building projects could mean a lot for the city’s residents: putting cash in their pockets and enabling them to spend it locally.
