Property crimes on the rise in Newark

After drop in killings, rise in property crimes leaves cops frustrated

Property crimes – burglaries, thefts and auto thefts – are on the rise in Newark, a discouraging subplot to the city’s celebrated decline in murders.

According to police records, the three categories of crime were up 13 percent through April 20, compared with the same period in 2007. The biggest spike was in burglaries, which jumped by 43 percent.

Police Director McCarthy says the NPD is adjusting their deployment strategy to adapt to the changing trend. Newarkers may want to check their insurance coverage. 😦
