This year, the poor economy and rising cost of summer camp is making fundraising for the Fresh Air Fund more important than ever, Genova said.

On June 18, his law firm, Genova, Burns & Vernoia, will host the 22nd annual Battle of the Barristers, a softball tournament among 16 Newark-area law firms that raises money for the program. The event, which has raised more than $1 million for the Fresh Air Fund over the past 20 years, will be held at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield.

“We’ve set some significant goals for ourselves,” he said. “We’re excited to be a part of this.”

The kids and their parents were also excited yesterday, as they recounted last summer’s fun.

Akane said she likes going to camp better than sticking around Newark in the summer.

“I get more exercise and more stuff to do, instead of watching TV in the house,” she said.

The Fresh Air Fund is still accepting applications for this summer.
